If honey has been appreciated since ancient times, royal jelly was only discovered in the middle of the 17th century, the moment from which this well-known and traditionally used super-food entered Olympus.
Rich in precious nutrients and without particular contraindications, royal jelly can provide energy and support for the organism in the most stressful and demanding periods such as season changes, exams, intense work, convalescence.
It can also be used without problems by practically everyone, both by adults (including pregnant or breastfeeding women) and by children and the elderly.
What is royal jelly?
Royal jelly is a product secreted exclusively by suckler worker bees between the 5th and 14th days of adult life. It is a protein-like substance, light yellow, with a characteristic smell and a sour-sugary taste, the production of which is the consequence of a real supernutrition of pollen by bees.
Royal jelly feeds all young larvae until the third day of life. Subsequently, royal jelly food is reserved only for the few who will take the title of "queen bee", while the other bees (future males and workers) will grow with a mix of honey and pollen.
Keep in mind that a worker bee lives about 45-90 days while a queen fed royal jelly has a life cycle of over five years!
From the hive to the supplement
Royal jelly is produced by beekeepers in quantity through deception of the worker bees, who begin to produce jelly for a large number of queens, of whom, at the end of the harvest, only a few will survive.
The procedure allows you to collect only a few grams of royal jelly for long hours of work by the beekeeper. The collection from the hives is then carried out by manual scraping carried out with non-metallic tools or by sucking through glass tubes, to then be placed in sterile glass containers until it reaches a sufficient quantity for processing.
Royal jelly is then filtered to remove all impurities and cooled in special containers to be marketed fresh or freeze-dried and offered in the form of supplements in capsules, powder, ampoules.
Benefits and properties of royal jelly
The main constituents of royal jelly vary according to the hives: water, proteins, sugars, lipids, vitamins and mineral salts. Aside from the water content, royal jelly is made up of:
- Proteins and amino acids (in proportion 30-55%) with 17 amino acids including the 8 essential amino acids.
- Sugars such as fructose and glucose (from 33% to 43%), in proportions similar to those of honey, as well as sucrose and maltose in variable proportions (usually below 10%).
- Enzymes that assist digestion (catalase, amylase, invertase, phosphatase) and have the function of digesting ribonucleases, deoxyribonucleases, proteins, lipids.
- Fatty acids, including unsaturated fatty acid 10-HDA, trans-10 hydroxy-D2-decenoic acid (present only in royal jelly). These fatty acids are responsible for most of the biological properties associated with royal jelly.
- Vitamins, in particular, those of complex B: B1, riboflavin B2, pantothenic acid B5, niacin, folic acid B9, PP, biotin, B12, inositol.
- Mineral salts, consisting of potassium, calcium, sodium, zinc, iron, copper and manganese.
From the nutritional composition of royal jelly it is clear why it has always been used as a tonic-tonic and natural remineralizing suitable for those who present:

- adults subject to stress and debilitation,
The most precious component of royal jelly is 10-Hydroxydecanoic acid, an active ingredient, which together with roialisin (protein with antimicrobial properties) makes it a natural antibiotic, giving it good antiviral and antibacterial properties against various strains, which cause fever, cough, cold.
Furthermore, being the source of the B complex vitamins (in particular pantothenic acid B5 very useful for the health of skin and hair), it has an immunomodulating action, enhancing the immune system and modulating the production of antibodies, preventing cooling diseases and other types of 'infections.
The presence of acetylcholine, a substance present in the nervous tissue, important in the transmission of impulses, also provides royal jelly with a protective action on the nervous system, counteracting anxiety and sleep disturbances.
Directions for use
For better absorption of nutrients, it is recommended to take royal jelly by mouth and on an empty stomach, preferably 15-30 minutes before breakfast.
